Big Slackwater is now Open

On October 13, 2012, after two years of construction, the Big Slackwater section of the C&O Canal  re-opened with fanfare!  An official ribbon cutting was held that morning celebrating the opening of this beautiful part of our National Park.  The Potomac River was glistening on this special day as a nice crowd took part in the ceremony and then took a walk on this 2.7 Mile stretch that has been closed from flood damage since 1995.

Working from the river, barges brought in pre-fabbed bridges and walkways to form a safe extension of this beautiful towpath.  Cyclists and hikers can now travel the entire 184 Mile stretch from DC to Cumberland without any detour.  What a project!
